Pressure Points

Pressure Points

In the 1950s, people were told the firmer the mattress, the better. This wasn’t based on science; it was based on mattress stores wanting to sell more mattresses. What science actually tells us, is that the firmer the mattress, the less it supports your body and that leads to pressure points. Pressure points cut off blood flow which interrupts your sleep cycle, leaving you exhausted, from another poor night’s sleep. As you can see from the accompanying pressure mapping imagery, the Afloat mattress completely conforms to the shape of your body, eliminating pressure points so you can sleep undisturbed.

  • Back Sleeper

    Hard Floor

The red color means high pressure and no blood circulation. As you would expect, lying on a hard floor puts tremendous pressure on both the upper and lower back.

  • $300 Futon

With the addition of a futon mattress, we begin to see a significant easing of pressure on the skeletal system.

  • $3000 Memory Foam

Even though it costs thousands more than a $300 futon, a Tempur-pedic mattress offers about the same level of support as the much cheaper futon.

  • Afloat logo

The Afloat mattress more evenly supports a back sleeper’s body, completely eliminating pressure points and providing you with a good night’s sleep.

  • Side Sleeper

    Hard Floor

For side sleepers on a hard floor, the pressure is extremely concentrated in both the shoulder and hip areas.

  • $300 Futon

With the addition of a futon pressure distribution is slightly improved but still remains highly concentrated.

  • $3000 Memory Foam

A top-of-the-line traditional mattress still doesn’t provide enough even support to eliminate a side sleeper’s pressure points.

  • As the image clearly shows, an Afloat mattress gives side sleepers a stable, supportive foundation on which to attain a consistently restful night’s sleep.

Why even pressure is critical to a good night’s sleep.

As you can see from the graph, the deepest, longest sleep cycles are the first two after you fall asleep. They are the most critical to ensuring a restful night’s sleep because as the night goes on, sleep cycles get shorter and more shallow. So, when a clap of thunder shakes the house or a car alarm goes off, or a loud motorcycle drives past and you wake up, your natural sleep cycle is interrupted. The same thing happens when you have to reposition your body due to the pain caused by pressure points.

Sleep Cycle

While you can’t control outside noises interrupting your sleep, you can certainly control what kind of mattress you sleep on. And the only mattress proven to provide even pressure while you sleep, thereby eliminating painful pressure points and ensuring a deeper, more restful level of continuous sleep is the Afloat mattress.
