The Great Nap Debate: Should You be Power Napping?

The Great Nap Debate: Should You be Power Napping?

Aug 19th 2020

It’s Saturday afternoon and you just finished those weekly errands. You get back home and you kind of just want to stay on your couch and take a nice, long snooze. We get it. Napping is great and who doesn’t love a nice slumber?

Now how long you should be napping is another subject. Some say napping right after work is the perfect time frame, but others say the opposite. Truth be told, timing of your naps just depends on you and your schedule and daily habits.

One thing is certain about napping though - it helps you recharge. Yes, you may feel a little fatigued after waking up but afterwards, you should feel refreshed and ready to tackle your tasks for the day. In order to have an immediate burst of exuberant energy after your mini snooze, we suggest power napping.

So what is a power nap? Power naps are short periods of sleep that are meant to give you a burst of energy when waking up. They usually take about 15-20 minutes and don’t exceed the 30 minute mark.

In that short period of time, you’re enjoying a light sleep stage (stage 2 to be exact). Compared to naps that are hours long, your alarm won’t go off while you’re in REM sleep. It’s as simple as that.

You’ll immediately wake up and be ready to take on the rest of the day. It’s perfect for those who want a little break and who are strong believers of the infamous siesta.

If you still prefer your long naps, no worries. It’s what works for you and your schedule. If you like the idea of power napping, then here are a few tips to make the most of your mini snooze.

Drink Coffee Beforehand

This may sound a little weird, but coffee will actually give you an extra push after your nap. Coffee (or “napuccino” as we like to call it) usually takes about 20-30 minutes to kick in, meaning that your body will absorb it after your power nap.

Get Cozy, but not too Cozy

Just like you would with any other nap, get comfortable so that you can sleep well. That means dimming the lights, putting your phone on silent, and even getting into those cozy pajamas that you love. But don’t get too comfortable now! The point of a power nap is to be able to wake up after the 20-30 minute mark.

Happy power napping!
